None of the steps below are easy, and they require hard work, discipline, and guidance from God.

Conduct a rapid examination of your finances by documenting all your expenses and income over the past three months. Distinguish between needs and wants, ruthlessly cutting down on unnecessary expenditures. Yes, streaming platforms, name brand sneakers, concerts, lattes, gym memberships, and vacations are wants, not needs. Unfortunately, to break the cycle, these cuts must happen.
Now, for the needs—the three most financially draining expenses are housing, transportation, and food. While it may seem impossible to live without them, we can certainly reduce the cost of each significant expense below.
Step #2: Housing Reevaluation
Address the major expense of housing by reconsidering your current living situation. Explore alternatives such as living with other family temporarily, getting roommates, downsizing your apartment, or relocating to a more affordable area. Changing your housing situation is a dramatic lifestyle change and will require much reflection before such a move. However, paying rent by yourself for $2500 versus splitting the cost with a roommate at $1250 can make all the difference for your paycheck. For me, I lived with my parents the first couple of years after college while saving money for my first condo.
Step #3: Practical Transportation Choices
Transportation is another substantial expense, and opting for a no-frills, reliable used car can help significantly. Focus on functionality rather than aesthetics, as a reliable vehicle that gets you from point A to B is what matters most on your journey towards financial freedom. It is tempting to finally own that shiny red sports car or 4×4 truck that will run you $40-60K, but a used reliable sedan for less than $20K will get you to work just as well. I mean, I drove a basic Toyota Corolla for much of my driving life.
Step #4: Culinary Cost-Cutting
The rising cost of dining out can be a significant drain on your budget. Learn to cook at home, where you have control over ingredients and costs. By avoiding restaurant markups, tips, and delivery fees, you can save a substantial amount on your food expenses. Cooking at home not only saves money but also allows you to enjoy nutritious meals tailored to your preferences. A double cheeseburger with fries at a chain restaurant will run you around $16-$20 these days. Add tip, taxes, and additional surcharges, and you are paying close to $30 for that meal. Now multiply that by a family of four, and you’ve got yourself a bill over $100. You can make four black bean cheeseburgers with a side salad and fruit for less than $10 if you made it at home. Your wallet and your stomach will thank you for it. I thrive on finding recipes that are budget-friendly.

Reflect on the importance of contentment, as highlighted in Hebrews 13:5:
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.‘

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
